Ten Things to do When You Walk to Your Vacation Place

Most of us have learned the healthy benefits of everyday walking.  You can expand your experiences by creating a fun activity of walking to any place on this continent you would love to visit.  You can choose a place and get the facts on the mileage from your house to your dream vacation site.  At this time set that mileage as your goal.  To track the miles you walk, invest in a pedometer to keep track of your steps and translate your steps into mileage. Keep a map journal of the miles you walk each day and when you reach your goal – celebrate!  This will give you a real sense of accomplishment.

I’m making plans to walk from Indiana to Maine without leaving my community.  I’ll be picking out historical places and favorite cities/sites in each state.  Then I will be writing to the Chamber of Commerce and ask them to send me brochures and pertinent information of each location.  That way when I “arrive” on my map journal I will pull out the information and feel like I’m actually there walking around and enjoying the scenery and sites.  It just makes long distance walking a fun activity with a goal purpose.

1)     Pick your vacation place

2)     Get the mileage from your house to your vacation place

3)     Get a pedometer

4)     Make a map journal:  you can actually use a US map and with a red magic market track your miles as you walk through each state

5)     Pick out historical places and favorite cities/sites in each state you will be walking through

6)     Write to the Chamber of Commerce and ask for information relating to your choices in #5

7)     When you walk the distance and “arrive” in those cities, look at the brochures/information the Chamber of Commerce sends to you and enjoy the environment and communities

8)      Don’t forget after about 500 miles check your shoes – they may need to be replaced

9)     You may want to find a buddy to join you in your long distance walking adventure

10) Estimate how many miles you need to walk a day to arrive at your vacation place in a reasonable time.  You will not leave your own community in your long distance walking adventure; however, you can make it fun and rewarding.

Wow! What a very creative idea! I like it a lot!!
It could be combined with learning something from the area , like music in Nashville, or cooking etc.
